COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

 

CLOTHING CONSTRUCTION

Course # 747 GRADES 9-12 CR 1/2 Q
Students in this course will develop skills, abilities and competencies in clothing construction. The students will be required to purchase patterns, fabrics, and notions of their choice to construct a minimum of two projects. Producing products of quality construction and demonstrating an understanding of how to read a pattern are goals of this course. Students will demonstrate competency in the areas of fabric types, fabric care, pattern instructions and layout, operations of sewing machines, and construction using seam functions, casings, facings, zippers, buttons and hems.

 

ADVANCED CLOTHING

Course # 749 GRADES 9-12 CR 1/2 QADV
This course will provide students who have completed one quarter of Clothing Construction opportunities to develop advanced skills and competencies in clothing fabrication. Students will study the construction of various advanced techniques, wardrobe planning and color analysis. Students will construct a minimum of two projects with lining. Advanced Clothing may be elected twice for credit. Prerequisite: Clothing Construction.

 

INTERIOR DECORATING

Course # 745 GRADES 9-12 CR 1/2 Q
This is a must course for those going on to become an architect, designer, decorator or future home buyer. Students will learn the basic design and applications of interior decorating through lectures, discussions, textbook, worksheets, homework, presentations and videos. The topics covered are: human needs and home design, elements and principles of design, housing styles, lighting, window treatments, floor and wall coverings, drawing floor plans, furniture styles and designs, kitchen designs and traffic patterns. There will also be a related field trip to a furnishing store where careers as well as reinforcement of topics learned will be assessed. The students' final exam is a portfolio based on an evaluation inclusive of all concepts taught during the quarter. Presentations are dynamic, and parents are welcomed and encouraged to come and participate in question and answer session of portfolio explanation.

 

INTRODUCTION TO FOODS

Course # 733 GRADES 9-12 CR 1/2 Q
You will learn the fundamental skills required for the planning and preparation of a variety of basic food items. Through class instruction and laboratory practice you will actively learn about nutrition, budgeting and quality food preparation. You will also learn how your current nutritional habits may or may not benefit you in the future. This course is a prerequisite to all other foods courses.

 

GOURMET DESSERTS

Course # 735 GRADES 9-12 CR 1/2 Q
Students in this course will be provided the opportunity to apply those skills and competencies from Introductory Foods to the area of dessert preparation. Topics included are: gelatins, pastries, puff pastries, cakes, chocolate, candies, gingerbread houses and cake decorating. Specific projects of student interest will be assigned as part of this course. Those students participating in the SHS Culinary Arts program find this course especially helpful in the pursuit of their careers Prerequisite: Introductory Foods.

 

INTERNATIONAL FOODS

Course # 737 GRADES 9-12 CR 1/2 Q
Students in this course will develop an understanding of the nature of food preparation in other regions. Students will be provided the opportunity to apply the cooking techniques from a variety of cultures. Topics will include cooking techniques from different regions of the United States as well as China, Mexico, France, Germany, Spain and other countries. Prerequisite: Introductory Foods.

 

HEALTHY CUISINE

Course # 739 GRADES 9-12 CR 1/2 Q
Students in this course will investigate nutrients in depth and learn how to apply this knowledge to their own history. The course consists of projects aimed at this investigation along with the application of the principles of healthy cooking in the food lab. Topics will also include the comparison of foreign foods to their American counterparts, recipe substitutions to make healthier versions, health concerns, vegetarion diets , and fad diets. This course is geared towards the student who would like to pursue a career in nutrition, family and consumer science, or dietary counseling. Prerequisite: C+ or better in Introductory Foods.

 

STUDENT SURVIVAL SKILLS FOR LIFE AFTER SHS

Course # 742 Grades 10-12 CR 1/2 Q
Students will learn the basic consumer skills needed to succeed in life after high school. The following topics will be covered: apartment seeking, personal finance, credit, car buying and insurance, and life and health insurance. The design of the classroom is taught through lecture, discussions, textbook, worksheets, videos, group work, role playing, presentations, critical thinking techniques, homework and guest speakers. Valuable, realistic consumer information will be addressed. All students should understand and look forward to their forthcoming adult rights and responsibilities.

 

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT & RELATIONSHIPS

Course # 744 Grades 11-12 CR 1/2 Q
This is an excellent course for any student pursuing any secondary education/career for childcare, elementary education or future parents/caretakers. This course will allow students to explore the following units: understanding yourself, relationships and families, communications skills, family challenges, preparing for children, meeting children's needs and parenting skills. The design of the classroom is taught through lecture, discussions, textbook, work-sheets, videos, group work, role playing, presentation, critical thinking techniques, homework and guest speakers. The curriculum will allow for reinforcement of concepts through real life application. There are also three enjoyable reading books that interface with the units addressed in the course.
