SCHOOL-TO-CAREERS INTERNSHIPS
“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
That question will have to be answered soon by your child. School-to-Careers can help with the answer!
The internship class is for all juniors and seniors, whether they plan to go to college or not.
Throughout history, one of the major goals of education has been to have students acquire the ability to link academic knowledge to practical work experience. Many students are completing twelve years of schooling with no idea of what type of career they would like to pursue, or how to go about achieving their career goals. Even more importantly, many students do not understand the relevance of certain classes to success in life.
Salem High School has addressed this need by collaborating with local businesses in order to offer internship opportunities to high school students through the School-to-Careers Program. Students who commit to an internship in their desired career field enjoy numerous benefits:
- They learn to blend academic and occupational skills
- They gain a more realistic sense of a typical workday
- They acquire practical experience in communication
They learn to interact with others
- They improve critical thinking skills
They build a relationship with a mentor
Here are some quotes from past interns about this powerful program:
- It is easy to learn when you are somewhere you want to be learning something that you love.
- I think this class has the opportunity to teach more than a normal class would. This internship was a very rewarding experience.
- This course gave me more than what I thought I would get out of it. I have learned life lessons that will last me a lifetime.
- This experience has been so great for me. My mentor shed light on so many things for me that I am coming out of this much stronger and smarter than any way I could of thought possible.
- My internship has shown me all different possible views of this field.
- This is the best thing I have ever done in school. I would definitely do it again in a heartbeat.
- I know taking this internship course is definitely going to help me show my passion in my college interviews for my major in Physical Therapy.
We encourage all juniors and seniors to seriously consider signing up for a career internship. Internship applications will be passed out to all upperclassmen once the scheduling process begins. It is a simple application. The cover sheet lists the steps to be completed in the application process. We encourage students to find their own internship work sites, but if they cannot find a location, they will receive assistance from the School-to-Careers Office.
